The Member of Parliament for Namwala Constituency, Hon. Moono Herbert Mapani, on 30 April 2026 commissioned and handed over a newly constructed 1×3 classroom block at Mpili Primary School in Itapa Ward. The project was funded under the 2025 Constituency Development Fund (CDF) at a cost of K1,039,718.46.
Delivering his keynote address, Hon. Mapani said the project addressed long-standing challenges faced by the school, where learners had previously attended classes under trees and in temporary structures, often sitting on the ground. He noted that the new classroom block provided a safe and conducive learning environment, restoring dignity for both learners and teachers.
Hon. Mapani added that the project formed part of broader CDF investments in the education sector across Namwala District and urged the community to take responsibility for maintaining the facility.
Mpili Community School was established by the community in 2006, initially offering Grades 1 to 4 and run by untrained volunteer teachers. Lessons were conducted under trees before shifting to temporary pole-and-mud, grass-thatched structures. In 2022, the school was officially recognised by the government, leading to the deployment of three trained teachers.
At that time, the school only catered up to Grade 4, forcing learners to walk approximately 15 kilometres to Itapa Primary School to access upper grades. However, with the deployment of trained teachers, the school expanded to offer Early Childhood Education (ECE) up to Grade 7.
Furthermore, the construction of the modern CDF-funded classroom block and the provision of 60 desks significantly improved learning conditions. This contributed to increased enrolment, with the number of learners rising from 100 in 2022 to 211.
