Women beneficiaries under the Supporting Women’s Livelihoods (SWL) component of the Girls’ Education and Women’s Empowerment and Livelihoods (GEWEL) Project in Moobola Ward have shared out K971,945 in savings accumulated through eight savings groups, demonstrating the impact of financial inclusion and enterprise development.
The share-out ceremony, held on 9 July 2026 at Moobola Grounds, was attended by the Senior Community Development Officer for Southern Province, Ms. Felistus Mubukwanu, Namwala District Community Development Officers led by District Community Development Officer Ms. Cynthia Bbuku, traditional leaders and other stakeholders. The event was officiated by District Administrative Officer Mr. Sokoloko Daka, representing District Commissioner Mr. Ephraim Shandavu.
During the event, beneficiaries showcased the progress made since receiving productivity grants of US$225 (approximately K6,000) each in 2025 following a 21-day Life and Business Skills training in entrepreneurship, financial literacy and sustainable business management. The grants enabled the women to establish and expand income-generating businesses while building a strong culture of saving through village savings groups.
The eight savings groups shared out a combined K971,945, with members reinvesting in businesses, housing projects, livestock and crop production, thereby improving household incomes and strengthening their economic resilience.
The SWL component targets women aged 19 to 64 years from Social Cash Transfer beneficiary households. Beneficiaries are organised into savings groups and utilise the DreamSave digital application to manage contributions, loans and transparent share-outs. Through continued mentorship by the Department of Community Development under Namwala Town Council, participants are strengthening their businesses, sustaining savings practices and building financially resilient households.
The programme continues to contribute to the economic empowerment of women, particularly those from female-headed households, while promoting financial inclusion, sustainable livelihoods and the socio-economic development of Namwala District.
