Overview

Namwala District is located in the Southern Province of Zambia. It shares boundaries with Monze (South-East),

Choma (South), Kalomo (South), and Itezhi-Tezhi (North-West). The district is approximately 170 km north-west of Choma and 158 km from Monze. Covering an estimated 10,000 square kilometres, Namwala lies between latitudes 15°–17° South and longitudes 25°–27° East.

Namwala acquired township and district status in 1957. The district is home to four traditional leaderships: Chief Mukobela, Chief Mungaila, Chief Nalubamba, and Chief Muchila. The population stands at 101,589, growing at an annual rate of 2.1%, with about 60% of residents below 18 years, making it a youthful district with strong human capital potential.

Geography and Environment

A significant portion of Namwala’s land—about a quarter—is covered by the Kafue Flats, stretching from beyond the Kafue Road Bridge to Itezhi-Tezhi Dam. About 5,671 square kilometres

of this area forms part of the vast plain. The terrain is largely flat and gently slopes toward the Kafue River basin.

Namwala’s ecological conditions support productive agriculture, cattle ranching, fisheries, and wildlife conservation. Its natural landscape makes it one of Zambia’s notable livestock regions.

People and Culture

Namwala is predominantly inhabited by the Ila and Tonga-speaking people. The district is well known for its rich cultural heritage, cattle-rearing traditions, and community values centred on agriculture and social unity.

The indigenous population engages mainly in:

  • Crop farming
  • Cattle ranching
  • Fishing along the Kafue River and floodplain

Cultural ceremonies, traditional livestock management practices and strong community structures form a key part of the district’s identity.
